The New India Express reported the Agastya Theatre, which opened March 9, 1967, announced it would be closing permanently September 1, 2020, and because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it hadn’t been in operation for about six months.
India news sources noted it had a 26ft screen, 1,004 seats and a balcony, very rare for Chennai, and in its heyday was very affordable for the locals.
Other than 70mm, digital projection, and Dolby sound the building had never been updated, using giant fans instead of air conditioning for circulation.
With the rise of multiplexes newer films were harder to book and attendance begin to drop in 2010. Chennai citizens needn’t worry as there are 61 other cinema in the city and the site is destined for redevelopment.
