The Rex Theatre was a theatre that played both English language and Spanish language films that was started by J.A. Card. It launched on October 31, 1947 with “Bar 20”, a serial “Devil Horse” and a cartoon. The Spanish language films appear to have been programmed by the Azteca Film Distribution Company.
Azteca was the primary source of Spanish language feature films and short subjects in the Hollywood era in the United States. 90% of Azteca films played at the Rex Theatre. This led to a lawsuit from the competing Ramirez Theatre. The Rex Theatre was still in operation in the 1950’s when the town had a high-water mark of four operational movie theatres. Not bad for a town of fewer than 5,000 people.
