Upstate New York movie mogul William C. Smalley opened his second theater in Gilbertsville in 1914. Local Facebook recollections indicate the theater was located in the current Butternut Valley Grange Hall, built as a Presbyterian Church in 1832 and repurposed for use as a Town Hall in 1899, with a stage and curtain added in 1903. The room appears to have been used intermittently for events and live music in the years that followed, and has been in use as such a Grange Hall since 1952.
