The Ritz Theatre was Cambridge, Nebraska’s final movie theatre. The earliest films were seen at its Opera House (which burned down) and then its Auditorium. Regular movies were seen in the silent era at the De Luxe Theatre (which burned down) and its replacement as the Electric Theatre turned Fair Theatre (which burned down). Sound films were then seen first at the Fair’s replacement, Cozy Theatre (which burned down) and this theatre, the Ritz Theatre.
The Ritz Theatre began as a competitor to the Cozy Theatre in 1940. That move prompted the Cozy Theatre to perform a major refresh in 1940. The two theatres co-existed throughout World War II and into the early-1950’s but the Cozy Theatre reportedly suffered a fire that ended the operation.
The Ritz Theatre’s halcyon days were under the operation of George “Bud” and Emma Baughman who ran the theatre into the TV age. They also added a photographic studio. However, the family moved to Texas and the theatre continued into the 1960’s with Homer Roberts and his son, Bob, running the operation likely to its closure.
