The Bladen Opera House launched with a live show from impressionist Sydney Landon on February 12, 1913. The theatre was equipped for motion pictures from the outset and featured films twice a week. On April 9,1913, P.C. Grandstaff began the films and advertised them as the Dix Theatre. The Dix Thetare closed with silent films on September 9, 1931.
The trade press said that the theatre was wired for sound and briefly called there Bladen Theatre and then, finally, in 1945, Donald Lewis spent several months refreshing the venue and renamed it the Star Theatre. Movies were the primary programming until the theatre closed in 1959.
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) Meetings took place there. Movies made a brief comeback in 1977 in the IOOF Hall and Bladen Opera House. The National Register of Historic Places listed it in 1988. The Opera House was largely vacant at its 100th Anniversary and renovation efforts were ongoing into the 2020’s.
