Opera House

The Kleinschmidt & Engelken Block was constructed sometime before 1893. It was a large brick structure containing four storefronts. The eastern half contained Engelken’s Opera House on the second floor.

Sometime between 1911 and 1925, the space became a cinema. It appears that the stage at the rear was removed. The theatre remained in operation at least through 1951.

The building is very well preserved and it appears that the upper story is now offices or apartments.

The Opera House in Versailles, Ohio, was mentioned in the August 17, 1918 issue of The Moving Picture World. The name did not appear in the 1914-1915 American Motion Picture Directory, which listed only two movie houses, called the Royal and the Gem, at Versailles.
