Would be theatre owners looked at the boom town of Picher as a potential gold mine… or at least a lead mine because the town was growing quickly as lead was in demand due to bullet production for World War I. One early theatre created during the War and a year prior to the town’s incorporation was the Idle Hour Theatre designed for motion pictures. It launched in 1917. In October of 1917, it switched to Bluebird Photoplays and became the Bluebird Theatre.
On April 28, 1918, the the theatre - then under new operator W.D. Mineland who owned theatres in Missouri and Oklahoma - took on the Bluebird Theatre and renamed it as the Liberty Theatre combining live acts and motion pictures. By year’s end, the Main Street Theatre Circuit took on the theatre. The Liberty Theatre went out of business in 1922 first becoming a dance hall and then retrofitted for a tailor/clothing business also in 1922.
