The Koppes Lichtspiele was opened in 1929. In 1937 it was renovated and enlarged. It was re-named Capitol Lichtspiele with a capacity of 600-seats. On 11th September 1944 it was badly damaged by Allied bombs during World War II.

Around 1949 the cinema was repaired and re-opened. In 1980-1981 it was renovated and converted into a clubkino with small tables and a reduced seating capacity of 100. It was operated by the Berzriksfilmdirektion Karl-Marx-Stadt. In 2006 the Chemnitzer Filmerkstatt too over the operation as a non-profic art house cinema.
