Films I remember seeing there: A Christmas Story, Mickey’s Christmas Carol and Gremlins.

“Casion Royale” opened the Century’s Richmond Theatre on June 14th, 1967. Grand opening ad posted.

I was speaking with someone from the Staten Island Historical Society about the Greenridge/New Springville issue. She said there is often that confusion. But she referred me to a book by Colin Reed entitled “Going to the Movies on Staten Island” in which he mentioned the theater and also had the copy of an ad, by Century, which specified it was a Red Carpet Theater in the Korvette Shopping Center in New Springville.

So my question to Pete Delaney, who put the theater on CT is what source did you have for the Greenridge designation?

I knew of the theater’s existence but initially couldn’t find in on CT because I was looking under New Springville, a reference I had seen in the Advance.

It’s interesting to note that when Century started expanding into shopping centers they also left their normal stomping grounds of Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island for the Richmond and the Paramus.

To the comments from 3 years ago regarding Shop-Rite at 985 Richmond Ave. That is still a Shop-Rite and is at the corner of Forest Ave. There used to be a Shop-Rite in the Pergament Center, where Century’s Richmond building still is. Shop & Stop replaced Shop-Rite. There were also a Beefsteak Charlie’s and Roll ‘n’ Roaster at some point. Best Buy (now) used to be Pergament Home Center and was Korvette’s before that. I am too young to remember the Drive-in, but spent some time between the Richmond and the Island Twin.

Hey MovieManBill, when did your sister go to Rocky Horror? I went between 84 and 86-87 and am curious as to whether I know her.

The theatre is now a Magic Tree store.

The book Going To The Movies On Staten Island wrongly states both this theatre and the Jerry Lewis Cinema on Forest Ave were demolished after closing. Is the building still vacant?

My sister took me to a midnight show of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” when I was around 12 years old (around 1979). The place was filled with rowdy teens, but I had a great time. She also took me to see “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball” (a live Monty Python movie). My sister Cathy is 7 years older than me and she was a constant participant at the showings of “Rocky Horror” at the Island Theater in the adjoining shopping center. I’m sure she has some good stories to tell.

There is no more Shop-Rite; it became a Stop and Shop a couple of years ago. The building that housed the theater is in a far corner of the lot, and it’s still standing. And empty.

I have not been out there in some time , but the former theatre is a seperate building. 985 may for some reason be a shared address. I don’t know what the theatre building is currently used for.

Shop-Rite is not the theatre.

The Richmond is/was special to me – I saw CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG there in 1969 when I was 5 – and then FIDDLER, and so many of my other favorites! It had a huge screen, and I miss it!

The Jembro store at the former Richmond theater site is now gone; the building is empty and “For Lease.”

Here is a photo of the Jembro sign on the front of the old Richmond Theater. There used to be a doorwar under the Jembro sign when it was the movie theater that you could walk out onto the ledge. It was bricked up and sealed when Crazy Eddie first took over.

Looking to hear from any Co-Workers who worked at this theater from April 1984 through October 1985.

Also, the row of stores next to the theater used to not attached to the movie theater building. There was additional parking at the time the theater was still open. About 3 or 4 stores were built and added sometime later on after the theater closed. ***Also, Eddie O'Jeda and A.J. Pero of Twisted Sister frequented this movie theater on a few occasions while I worked there.

I was the last Assitant Manager of the RKO Richmond Century Theater from April 1984 until it closed in October 1985. The exact address of the theater was 2795 Richmond Avenue in the Pergament Shopping Center. The last movie to play there was: “Back To The Future” starring Michael J. Fox. The movie that was playing there when I started was: “Dreamscape” starring Dennis Quaid, Max Von Sydow and Christopher Plummer.

Thanks for the info Garth. I saw the article about Travis in the Advance this weekend… I wonder what they’ll do with it. It seems everything around that area is doomed to fail.

korvettes was in the location that formerly pergament and now best buy stands. most of these theatres closed in 1987 when the travis multiplex opened. that multiplex now appears doomed itself , as is the amboy multiplex in n.j.– sad – why didn’t they ever convert to stadium seating?…..

I was always under the impression that Korvettes was where K-Mart is now. The Richmond Theatre is in the Pergament Shopping Center where Pergament used to be (now a Best Buy) and Toys R Us still stands.
The Island Theater was in the same shopping center as K-mart.
