The Ritz Theatre was one of three movie theatres in the Stephenville downtown area and its first sound-era venue on the courthouse square. The Ritz Theatre was on the east side of the square and built into the existing Cox Building. It joined the Palace Theatre and the Majestic Theatre on Belknap Street. Mrs. Thomas Donnell launched the Ritz Theatre for Jake Hendrick with Eddie Bracken in “Hold That Blonde” on December 23, 1945. The 400-seat venue had been ready earlier but war shortages forced the delay.
In 1950, Jack Arthur Theatres held all five Stephenville theatres including the Tower Theatre and the Starlite Drive-In. He would close the Palace Theatre, the Tower Drive-In and then, on March 18, 1956, he closed the Ritz Theatre with Katharine Hepburn in “Summertime”. The theatre had one more invitation screening but was converted to a Singer sewing machine retail store.
