The Apollo Licht und Schauspielhaus was opened on 8th November 1935 with 1,023-seats. It was operated by Franz Helms. The theater was designed by architect Ernst Huhn. The E VII B projectors were by Ernemann and a Klangfilm sound system was installed. The size of the stage was 8x12 meters. The Apollo screened movies and live performances took place. In 1941 Paul Preussler Metropol Theatre GmbH took over. The cinema was destroyed by Allied bombs during World War II.

It was rebuilt and re-opened on 16th December 1948. In 1957 a CinemaScope screen was added and a 4-channel stereophonic sound sytstem by Klangfilm was installed. The seats were by Schroeder & Henzelmann. In 1978 the Fuch GmbH took over the operation and 4 more screens were added. In 1982 one more screen was added. In 1992 it was taken over by the Ufa chain and they added one more screen. On 15th October 2000 the cinema was closed and it became a discotheque. In 2005 the building was demolished apart from the facade. A new Apollo live theatre was built on the site which opened in 2007.
