George and Faye McConnell moved from Washington, D.C. to a newly-forming town in far West Texas near the New Mexico border to be called Dell City. A geology team had found water which brought agriculture to the tiny town established in 1948.
The McConnells showed 16mm films in their home for entertainment before deciding to launch the El Capitan Theatre. It was likely named for the El Capitan peak in within the nearby Guadalupe Mountains. The long-running El Capitan Theatre showed Hollywood fare six days a week and Spanish language films on Sundays. The theatre was opened from the early-1950’s to the 1980’s and was operated by George McConnell to closure.
