The Orono Theatre was opened by 1914, occupying an old, wood-framed building which it shared with the local Roman Catholic church. In 1916 Frank Owen, the former operator of the Columbia Theatre in Bath, Maine, took over the lease on the Orono Theatre. He and his son operated the house until 1922, when they bought out the owner of a newer theatre, the Strand Theatre, which had opened the previous year. Owen then moved his operation, and the Orono Theatre’s superior screen and equipment, to the Strand Theatre building, and closed the Orono Theatre.
In 1925 the Orono Theatre building was taken over by the Byer Manufacturing Company, then makers of textiles and slippers. Byer has occupied it ever since, expanding and altering it over the years. The company now uses the building to manufacture camp furniture and folding and military cots, and also maintains a factory outlet store on site.
