First mentioned as a future site of a Jerry Lewis Cinema in 1972, ground was broken on August 7, 1973 for a new automated cinema in the already-existing Kahului Shopping Center, itself built in 1951. But by the time that Lewis franchisee, Halls of Hawaii and Robert Hall, was beginning its construction, Lewis had left the chain and the phones of the now-bankrupt parent company, Network Cinema Corporation were disconnected.
The Maui Theatre launched on May 2, 1974 with the film, “Vanishing Wilderness”. The theatre was listed as for lease in early-1977 and later that year became part of Consolidated Amusement Company Ltd. Circuit. It was closed in 1994. It was then used for a house of worship.

The Maui Theatre actually continued operating in and after January 1992, despite the later announcement of Consolidated’s Kihei’s Kukui Mall 4-Plex in June 1992 (which opened later that November). The Maui Theatre continued to run first-run movies (including some special events) as normal until a couple of years later when it closed for the final time in 1994.
