The MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry) in Tampa was known to be the 5th largest science center in the United States and the largest in the southeast ever since the MOSI opened on January 23rd, 1982.
13 years later in 1995, a major upgrade to the MOSI was planned and constructed, including a 190,000 square foot science center and the first IMAX Dome Theatre in the state of Florida along with extensive permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, a planetarium and a public library. It was completed and opened (along with the IMAX) in 1995.
On August 13, 2017, 85% of the MOSI including the IMAX was closed to save money. Many exhibits were removed and the remaining 15% of their exhibits were relocated to the previous “Kids in Charge” section of the museum.

Reopened on April 1, 2025 as the “Saunders Planetarium & IMAX Digital Dome Theatre” following a multi-million dollar upgrade and renovation. During the upgrade, the theater received a new interior screen, digital projection system, and star projection software. Current functions are first-run and educational films.
Prior to its August 2017 closure, it was last known as “Florida Hospital IMAX Dome Theatre”.
