As early as the 1920’s, Claude Bobo, owner of the Dreamland Theatre, was also operating a house called the Bocanita Theatre in an old wood-framed building on the north side of Scottsboro’s town square. Business was good, and in the late-1920’s Bobo decided to replace the old building with a larger, modern theater.

When the cost of the ambitious project reached $35,000, Bobo’s local financial backer, a woman named Texas Snodgrass, known as “Aunt Tex”, foreclosed on the incomplete building, though she hired Bobo to operate the theater once it opened. The house was opened in April 1930, and for several years operated with a dirt floor on the orchestra floor of the auditorium.

The narrow but tall structure featured a two-story arched entrance with a penthouse above it, and the set-back auditorium section, even taller, had two balconies. The Bocanita Theatre operated until 1954, and was demolished after closing. The single-story commercial building on the site today might incorporate parts of the theater’s side walls, but the tall, arched entrance and the taller auditorium structure are gone.
