Cinema House

Situated in Ramsey, Isle of Man, the Cinema House was opened in 1920 by Strand Theatre Company (1920) Ltd, based at 39 Strand Street, Douglas. By 1928 the manager was Walter R. Nicholson; shows were once nightly, including Sundays.

In 1934, the cinema was acquired, for £8,250, by Ramsey Amusements Company Limited, which had been established in 1931 by a group of business men with the intention to provide places of entertainment for Ramsey residents and holiday makers. This was their first venture.

In the 1937 Kinematograph Year Book the seating capacity was given as 1,200. However, by the following year that had reduced to 600. Assuming these figures are accurate, perhaps fairly basic forms had been replaced by tip-up seating.

It is not known when the Cinema House closed, but its final listing in the Kine Year Books is 1961.

It was subsequently demolished, but, in a nice touch, the replacement building (occupied by a car dealership) has a pediment over the entrance that echoes that of the Cinema House.
