This was a very modern styled cinema which opened on December 18, 1987 with 9-screens. Typical of those situated in a shopping mall, but two or three of the cinemas were the largest I have ever seen in a theatre located in a mall, and most of them had curtains that open before every presentation (which I don’t think any first run movie theatre does anymore in the state of New Jersey).
As you enter the theatre you pass the concession and box office which are on the top floor food court area of the mall. The first six auditoriums located on either side. As you come to the remaining cinemas they are much larger and the sound is better.
The last time I visited this theatre was 1988 and it was nice place to see a movie considering it was in the mall. I haven’t been there since so I wouldn’t know what condition it’s in now but it’s still open and has been operated by Loews, and now by AMC. On December 18, 1992 it was expended to 11-screens.

The theatres now feature Digital Presentations and 3D. Saw my first movie here yesterday in Digital. It was like taking the Wayback Machine to 1987 Cineplex Odeon days. Boy is this theatre worn out! I worked all the Southern California Cineplex house back then and everything was like then. Curtains were in there up position and the seats are vintage late 1980’s. Other than being designed for Cineplex, it reminded me of those Mann and UA theatre from that era but with curtains. They showed 8-9 commercials 1 trailer AMC stuff and the feature. Which was the best part of the visit. The picture was bright and sound was good.
recliners were installed at this theater recently.
Theater is now AMC Newport Center 11. Later this year will mark 30 years since it opened.
Does anyone know in what year the 10th and 11th screens were built/added?
A shooting occurred at the mall today where one person was shot and as a result the mall is being evacuated.
A few miles away from this location there was a major police shooting involving an officer. Thankfully the people are safe inside the Sacred Heart school where they are being protected by the cops.
Good grief, what does a shooting “a few miles from this location” have anything to do with the AMC Newport Centre 11, and why should any follow ups be posted here…??
Please update, 838 seats.
Please update, became 11 screens on December 18, 1992, use space previously used space when Cineplex had a espresso stand.
Cineplex Odeon opened 11 theatres on the same day. this one, Rocky Mount NC, Montréal, QC, Provo UT, Calgary AB, Edmonton AB, Washington DC, Jacksonville, FL and three in the Greater Toronto area.
