Hoyts Camillus Cinemas 10

CinemaNational had launched its twin-screen theatre in the Camillus Mall on March 25, 1983. (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures). The theatre proved so popular that the circuit added the 1,000-seat Camillus Mall Cinemas III, IV, V & VI on November 9, 1984. The opening films were “Oh God! You Devil”, “Country”, “No Small Affair”, “Silent Night, Deadly Night” and a midnight screenings of “Quadrophenia” and “Dawn of the Dead”.

The cinemas passed from CinemaNational to USA Cinemas to Loews / Sony and, finally, to Hoyts Cinema Corp. in March of 1996. The circuit announced a plan to close the I & II on September 2, 1996 and turn the III-VI into a ten-plex, Hoyts Camillus Cinemas 10.

The Camillus Mall went into quick descent thereafter as anchors Kmart, Sears, JC Penney and Hills bailed in the late 1990s. The greyfield mall conditions deteriorated to the point that Hoyts reportedly stopped paying rent in 2000 launching a lawsuit about the mall’s condition and threatened to close the theatre complex entirely in 2001. Hoyts made good on that promise on September 15, 2002.

Most of the mall was eventually demolished including the former 10-plex. The center returned to its 1964/1965 Camillus Plaza-era roots as an open air shopping and mixed use facility renamed as the Camillus Commons.
