On January 23, 1973, the Bakersfield Californian took a look back at its World War I era nickel movies.
One such operation was the C&S Theatre (Carnakis & Son), whose advertisement first appeared in the Californian on February 18, 1917, playing the “The Spoilers”.
In 1922 Mr. Carnakis closed the C&S Theatre and opened the Virginia Theatre next door. The C&S building was destroyed in the 1952 earthquake.
As late as 1973 the Virginia/Cinema 19 building was owned by the Carnakis family and leased it out. See the Cinema19 page on Cinema Treasures for more comments and information.
John Carnakis died in 1939 and his son Manuel, who would later serve as mayor and on the city council, passed on in 1997.
