This photo (not mine) clearly shows that at some point the Odeon / Classic was adapted for cinemascope with a new wide screen forward of the original proscenium:-

Hi
I’m looking for information re “Edwin Peacock” (my husbands Grandfather)who I believe was a cinema manager?? here during the 1940s. He started out as a “Theatre Lighting Electrician” in Runcorn Cheshire 1911, was in Ffestiniog, Wales 1919-1920, Brierfield Cinema Pendle Lancs 1932, and lastly he was at the Ambassador in Salford. There is also mention of the Odeon Manchester but no idea when this fits in. Any information or pointers would be very, very much appreciated.
Thanks very much

Gordon, I purchased your excellent calendar. Would you like me to scan and post the photos?

I’d love to but the feature is offline every time I try. It seems the only way is to post a link to another site hosting the pictures.
I’ll get around to doing this one day!

Dear Gordon
Share your excellent photo of this cinema [the artdeco looking upwards to the walkway] by posting it to the ‘add a photo’ at the top of this page.
Many thanks in advance?

I have such a soft spot for this cinema as my father was the ‘opening manager’ and I was interviewed for a job wi5th Odeon here in 1962. The projectionists walk way is unique and I would love to understand what has to bw done to get it listed!?

The diy chain that opened originally was called Paul Madeley’s

Hi the projection on top of the building is a mobile phone mast. Do you know if any interior features survive at all?

Ron, “DIY” stands for “Do It Yourself.”

Headers above need amending:
Address: Thornton Road and Euston Road
Function: Retail
Seats: 1,560

The Odeon Theatre opened on 2nd September 1937. Assisting Harry Weedon on the design of this theatre was architect W. Calder Robson.

It was one of many unprofitable Odeon Theatres that were sold off by the Rank Organisation to the Classic Cinema chain in 1967 and it was re-named Classic from 16th December 1967. It closed on 28th February 1976 and was converted into the One Stop DIY store which it still currently operates as.

Visted yesterday Sunday 20th Feb 2005, Some repair work has been done to cover windows on projectionists walkway, this has been painted green to co-ordinate with some other wook work so I was lightened to see a little repair work had been done. The main cooling tower seems to have sprouted a sizeable projection on the top the function of which is a complete mystery. One Stop DIY seems to still trading so the building may well be occupied for some time to come. A prime candidate for listing though…
