Teatro Ambra Jovinelli

Opened in 1909, the Teatro Jovinelli was founded by impresario Giuseppe Jovinelli. It is located in the Esquiline district of Rome, behind the Termini train station, and a few blocks from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. Since its beginnings, the Jovinelli has specialized in live comic theatre and vaudeville-style shows. Many of the greats in that field performed here, including the actor Toto', who had his premiere here in Rome.

Over the decades films were also shown here as far back as the silent era as special individual bookings. In the 1940’s and post-war years it became a regular continuous movie theatre. In its period of decline after the 1970s, red-light and porno films were presented. In recent years the theatre has had a resurgence, has been refurbished and upgraded. Now it offers stage comedy events and plays, and subscription series are very popular. The Jovinelli is closed during the summer.

On May 18, 1940 the Jovinelli, as a cinema and variety theatre, was showing the film “Le tre ragazze in gamba crescono” (Three Smart Girls Grow Up, 1939, with Deanna Durbin.) Filling out the program were live performances by the De Marco – Mascetti – De Rigo vaudeville-variety company. From a listing in Il Messaggero.
