Operettenhaus

Located in the city centre district of St. Pauli, in front of the famed Repperbahn. The Theatre Circus Gymnasticus opened in 1841 with 3,000-seats. It was re-named Central Halle in 1874 and was destroyed by fire in 1876. The theatre reopened in 1877. In 1904 it was re-named Neues Operettenhaus. In 1920 it was re-named Operettenhaus Hamburg. The theatre was destroyed by Allied bombs during World War II.

A new 1,500-seat theatre was built on the site in 1952 and opened as the Cinema Opperettenhaus, operated by Robert Bartholomay. It was equipped with Bauer B12 projectors and had a Klangfilm/Eurodyn sound system. In 1963 the World Premier of the German musical film “Heimweh nach St. Pauli” (Homesick for St. Pauli) was screened here.

In April 1986 the Operettenhaus went over to presenting big scale stage musicals, beginning with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” which played for 15 years, ending in January 2001. This was followed by “Fosse-Die Show” (June-December 2001), “Oh What a Night” the Four Seasons musical (January - June 2002) the Abba musical “Mamma Mia” (November 2002-September 2007), “Ich War Noch Niemals in New York” (I Have Never Been to New York) December 2007-September 2010, “Sister Act” (December 2010-August 2012), and the World Premiere of “Rocky” a musical based on the Sylvester Stallone film (December 2012-August 2015, “Kinky Boots” (December 2017-September 2018) and from March 2019 (Tina - The Musical) based on the life of Tina Turner.
