The Waterville Opera House was built in 1880. The entrance was on Main Street, which led to a flight of stairs to the auditorium on the second floor of the main building at 115-121 White Street. The Opera House started showing silent movies in the early twentieth century, but continued to present live entertainment. In 1913 it was leased by the Dreamland Amusement Company and screened movies as the Dreamland Theatre, although it retained its Opera House name for other forms of entertainment. By 1914 the Opera House no longer housed Dreamland, but continued to show movies. The last traveling roadshow played the Opera House in 1919, and the venue became dedicated to showing movies as the Lyceum Theatre from 1919 to 1930.
In November 1934 it was remodeled, renamed and converted into a sound movie theatre. The Strand Theatre was opened on December 25, 1934. It ran until the end of December 1966, but by January 1967 it was not showing movies. The first floor of the White Street building has since housed a pizzeria, a thrift store and apartments. The building is vacant in summer of 2019.
