Remember the 1958 Malaysia film “Sunpah Orang Minyak", directed by and starring P. Ramlee, or its 1976 Hong Kong take off “The Oily Maniac", a Shaw Brothers film? If not, how about the 1954 “Godzilla” from Japan? These are among a collection of nearly 2,000 classic Asian films in the library of the Asian Film Archive (AFA) at the National Archives of Singapore building. The AFA, founded in 2005, is a non-profit organization.
The films will be shown at the renovated Oldham Theatre, which reopened April 7, 2019, after an 18-month upgrade. The new 135-seat theatre can screen films in 4K digital, 35m, and other formats.
The Strait Times notes the National Archives building was built in 1955 and Keith Goh of RSP Architects was the team leader for the restoration of the building and theatre.
