Castle Theatre

The Castle Theatre was opened by B.S. Moss Enterprises adjacent to the Castles by the Sea Dance Hall as a venue for photoplays and vaudeville on June 28, 1923. Films were shown Monday - Wednesday; vaudeville presentations by B.F. Keith the balance of the week. This was a seasonal operation.

For the 1928 Summer Season which began on June 16th, management was taken over by the Keith-Albee circuit solely as a venue for films. The opening presentation was “The Last Command” with Emil Jannings.

Within a couple of years the Castle Theatre came under the management of the Werba Theatre chain. When they filed for bankruptcy in 1930 Ruggoff & Becker assumed management.

In May 1932 when Rugoff & Becker built their Laurel Theatre in Long Beach, the Castle Theatre solely presented Broadway shows.

It was a venue for WPA shows at the time it was damaged in the devastating July 1936 fire that swept the Boardwalk and was subsequently demolished.

Uploaded four pictures: postcard image showing BS Moss name, photo of the theatre (with no name) behind the Castles by the Sea, view of the back of the theatre from the Arcade Baths showing the Keith-Albee signage and an aerial photo of the million dollar 1936 Boardwalk fire.

Uploaded an ad indicating that, effective with the 1928 season, the Castle would be under the management of Keith-Albee and also another ad from the time period.
