Situated in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre, Earl Grey House was built in 1837 as part of Richard Grainger’s town improvements. Originally, there was a shop floor downstairs and large housing space upstairs, but in 1899 the building was altered to become Coxon drapery shop, with a tea-room in the basement, before being taken over by Binns department store in the 1930’s.
The buildings were refurbished in 1980. From 1982, until its closure in 2013, the basement was the well-known gay nightclub Legends. After closure, the space lay empty, until, in October 2017, plans the convert it into a luxury Everyman cinema were given the green light.
Known for presenting a mix of classics, art-house movies and blockbusters in luxurious surroundings, the company invested around £3m in the project, which created around 30 new jobs.
The cinema opened on Friday 3rd May 2019. Among the first films were the biopic “Tolkien”, Marvel superhero action adventure “Avengers: Endgame” and raucous comedy “Long Shot”.
Seating capacities are: Screen 1:79, Screen 2:51, Screen 3:50 and Screen 4:36. Screens 1 to 3 have Sony 4K projection, Dolby 7.1 digital sound, satellite capabilities and are 2D only. Screen 4 has NEC 2K projection, Dolby 7.1 digital sound, satellite capabilities and RealD 3D. There are, of course, the usual extensive bar and restaurant facilities.

Very few people in Newcastle use language like “Howay it’s canny lush down ‘ere!”. The few who do are certainly not the well – heeled set most likely to visit Everyman cinemas.
As in the case of their other most recent developments, there is nothing at all “lush” about the screen area…….
