The Comoedia was opened in 1914. The cinema was destroyed by German bombs in 1944.

It was rebuilt in a Streamline Moderne style, reopening in 1949 as a 700-seat single screen. It was later equipped to screen 70mm films and “Ben Hur” played here. “West Side Story” ran for 40 weeks. It was expanded to three screens in 1974, and in 1982 it became a six screen cinema. In 1993 it was taken over by UCG and they closed it at the end of December 2003.

It re-opened in November 2006, operating as an art-house cinema by Marc Bonny. Three new screens were added, opening on 18th October 2017. Seating capacities in the screens range from 292 down to 80. It is a member of the Europa Cinemas Group of art house cinemas.
