The New Theatre was launched February 24, 1947 with Eddie Bracken in “Ladies' Man”. Mayor Charlie Ward provided a speech prior to the first show. Glover A. Johnson had operated the Cherokee Theatre and spent $60,000 on a new-build facility which had extra-wide love seats at the rear of the auditorium for couples.
The New Theatre opened nameless and remained that way until October 20, 1947 when Johnson named it after his son, Emory. The pair would go on to create the 411 Drive-In in June of 1953. The Emory Theatre likely fulfilled a 20-year lease closing in 1968.
