The Braswell Theatre launched October 23, 1902 in downtown Demopolis as a live theatre likely on a twenty-year lease. In 1911, the Braswell Theatre was playing motion pictures and had a balcony for African American patrons.
On April 4, 1913, the A-Muse-U Theatre launched playing photoplays followed by the Elks Theatre in 1915 also playing movies which put pressure on the aging Braswell Theatre and the Opera House. The Elks Theatre and Braswell Theatre combined operations in 1915.
The Braswell Theatre was shifted back to primarily live events including plays, boxing matches, and local events. The Braswell Theatre closed in 1922 likely at end of lease. It was repurposed for other retail purposes.
