George: The Kent theater is now a supermarket
ps WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE KENT THEATER IT WAS ONE OF MANY THAT BELONGED TO THE CO. THAT OWNED THE EARL
PS FILM STILLS, AND I LIVED IN HIGHBRIDGE AT 1000 ANDERSON AVE. AND NEXT DOOR TO P.S. 73
I WORKED AS AN USHER AT THE EARL BUT DID MANY OTHER JOBS THERE, LIKE CHANGE THE MARQUEE WHEN A NEW FILM CAME IN OR CARRY THE FILM CASES UPSTAIRS TO THE PROJECTION ROOM, THE CASES WERE 6 SIDED AND HEAVY, I MISS THE EARL VERY MUCH, I REMEMBER WE USE TO GO ON THE ROOF TO WATCH A BASEBALL GAME IN YANKEE STADIUM, THERE IS A WOOD WATER TANK ON THE ROOF AND UNDER WAS A WOODEN BENCH THAT WE SAT ON,I COULD WRITE SO MANY THINGS ABOUT THE EARL NEXT TO THE EARL WAS THE ( JEROME CAFETERIA ) AND NEXT TO IT ON THE CORNER WAS A NEWSPAPER STORE THAT HAD CIGARETTES FROM AROUND THE WORLD, ACROSS THE STREET WAS A ENTRANCE TO THE SUBWAY AND THERE WAS A STORE WERE I HAD A 2 CENTS PLAIN SODA OR A MILK SHAKE, ON THE EARL SIDE WAS I THINK A BOHACK OR A 6 S SUPERMARKT, AND ACROSS WAS A CHOCK FULL OF NUT COFFEE SHOP, THIS WAS ALL IN THE 1960s AND TO LAST I ALSO CHANGED THE FILM POSTERS AND STILL IN THE SHOW CASES.
When I was 11 years old, my grammar school held its track team practices and events at McCoombs Dam Park. I saw “The THING” at the Earl and went there many other times. I just joined the site for the nostalgia and am enjoying the tour.
The other entrance referred to by Kyapiko is actually on River Ave, not Jerome Ave (which is in the other side of Yankee Stadium). Was this an alternate entrance for the theater as well? I know the sports bar was using both entrances – I just always assumed the River Ave entry was existing retail space. I added new photos, one a day shot of the 161st Street facade and a night shot of the River Avenue entrance – both taken within the last 3 years or so.
The former auditorium, reportedly as having been in very bad shape, has been recently gutted and work are being done inside for the expansion of the Sports Bar.
I saw this theater last night when I went to a Yankee Game. It is currently being used as a sports bar, or at least the lobby on both River Rd, and the other lobby on Jerome Ave is. I don’t know what if anything remains of the interior…any information would be appreciated.
Thanks for the posting of the picture. I have fond memories when I worked there as a projectionist. What a grand theater it was at one time.
Hi,
Does anyone have a high res copy of the Earl. The one listed at /theaters/5968_0_2_0_C/ is only 360 X 480. Does anyone have bigger?
Thanks,
Steve
When I was a college student in the early 1960’s, I worked in an ice cream parlor across the street from the Earl named Addie Vallins. On Saturday nights we used to get a crowd when the movie ended. Being around the corner from Yankee Stadium, sometimes a few of the Yankee players would come in for ice cream. Thanks for the photos KenRoe.
Three photographs of the Earl Theatre I took in June 2005;

I would love to see pictures of the Earl if anyone has any. Especially the Marquee

The Unity Restaurant is no longer there. It’s been replaced by a new bar/restaurant.
I worked my first shift as a projectionist in this grand old theater. I actually have a cup dispenser that was used in this theater. You know the ones that you put a penny in and got a cone shaped cup. I loved working there and had many good times. The first movies I ran there were Dirty Harry and The Wild Bunch. I’ll never forget those times. It was a ball. I only wish I had some photos of the building’s marquee
The auditorium has been used for a flea market and snack bar in recent years. Used entrance on Jerome Ave. Not sure if it is in use now.
