The Naval Air Station in Kingsville once housed a theatre. The 1,200-seat theatre was operated like a commercial house. Just after World War II, the Navy inactivated the theatre. On October 21, 1946 it became the Varsity Theatre with its naming due to its location - then - in the East Campus of what was Texas A&I College (now Texas A&M University Kingsville). The venue was popular with college students. But on January 31, 1949, the Varsity Theatre burned down.
