Charles E. Bein who ran a bank in the town was the operator of the 1st Harper Theatre. The silent-era operation closed in 1932 apparently without converting to sound. It was used for local events and live local plays.

On December 29, 1946, the El Rancho Theatre was opened by H.A. Porter showing Rita Hayworth in “Gilda”. The El Rancho Theatre featured Simplex projectors with Brenkert lamp houses and RCA sound. That theatre was renamed the Harper Theatre in 1949. It was closed September 12, 1954. It does not appear to have re-opened.

Harper Herald, April 15, 1949: “The El Rancho Theatre of Harper has been sold by the former owner, B. O. McDonald of Kerrville, to Walter R. Dills, also of Kerrville. Mr. Dills announced that he has changed the name of the theatre to the "Hartex” theatre and plans are to have a show each night of the week."

The Herald noted on Oct. 15, 1954 that “Roger Harper is the proprietor of the Hartex Theatre now”.
