Family Theatre

Four short-lived movie theaters operated on the ground floor of the Fraternity Building during the 1910’s. The Lyric Theatre opened on December 6, 1911, and operated until the middle of 1912 when it was moved to a larger location on S. Main Street.

After a hiatus of more than two years, movies returned to the Lyric’s location as the Queen Theatre, which opened on January 25, 1915, but the Queen abdicated just a few months later, declaring bankruptcy.

The house reopened as the Cozy Theatre in September, 1916, but again closed after only a few months. Another operator reopened the house as the Family Theatre in mid-1917, but the ill-fated theater had been closed again by March, 1918. The space was returned to retail use, which it remains to this day.
