The Southgate Shopping Center in Des Moines launched February 12, 1972. Anchored by Woolworth’s Woolco superstore and A&P Grocers, a Jerry Lewis Cinema franchisee had signed an agreement to open there, as well. Italo “Tony” Magnani opened the Jerry Lewis Twin Cinemas I & II on November 15, 1972 with the films, “The Cowboys” and “Bedknobs and Broomsticks.” The theatre was considered a family-friendly location with sub-run, discount shows at opening. It was the first Jerry Lewis Cinema location in Des Moines.
Lewis quit the chain in late-April 1973 and that prompted a number of operators to change the names of their theaters. Magnani changed his location to the Southgate Cinema I & II. The theatre closed after the May 7, 1974 showings of “Sugarland Express” and “McQ.” The space was retrofitted for other retail purposes with the shopping center continuing into the 21st Century.
