The 600-seat Salem Theatre was opened in 1938. This Art Deco-meets-Egyptian style movie house was operated by Kerasotes and closed as a movie theatre in 1999. Now with 400 seats it is no longer used for showing movies. The Salem is still very much alive, used for live theatrical productions and various special events.

Cool looking facade. The box office looked like it must have been clad in vitrolite at some point. Storefronts have obviously been extensively remodeled from their original appearance. Photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/ctid5912/
Website is down. Shows listed on their Facebook page.
Can we get a better history? The storefronts and ticket booth were indeed covered in vitrolite. To see what it looked like in the early ‘70s, go to: http://gis.hpa.state.il.us/hargis/ and enter 'Salem Marion’ in the search bar. Theater will be the first result.
