In Addlestone, Surrey, in October 2015, plans were finalised for the massive Addlestone One town centre regeneration project, which would include private and affordable homes, a Waitrose store and other shops, a Premier Inn hotel, a gym, restaurants and cafes – and, of course a cinema. (The town had been without its own ‘big screen’ entertainment since the Plaza Cinema closed in the 1950’s.) Costed at £70m, the project was led by property developers Bouygues Development, on behalf of Runnymede Borough Council. Designed by Weybridge-based architecture practice Broadway Malyan, it was planned to be finished in just over two years’ time. A lease was signed with Light Cinemas to operate the development’s multiplex cinema.
A year later, in October 2016, it was announced that it was hoped that the cinema would be open by October 2017. (Meanwhile, the cost of the whole development had risen to £90m.) However, that date came and went and, in April 2018, it was announced that it would be opening that July. At that time, a number of other retail, restaurant and café units were still to be let.
That date also passed but, finally, the cinema was ready, and an Open Day was held on Saturday 29th September 2018. A full array of current and recent releases was screened, and there was a preview of the forthcoming Warner Bros. children’s film “Smallfoot”, due to be released on 12th October. Migo and Meechee, characters from that film, were on hand, while all tickets were just £5 and food and drink was half-price. A week later, on Friday 5th October, the Light multiplex had its ‘official’ opening.
The opening films were “Johnny English Strikes Back”, “A Star in Born”, “Venom”, “A Simple Favour”, “The House with a Clock in its Walls”, “King of Thieves” and “Night School”.
Seating capacities are: Screen 1:133; Screen 2:116; Screen 3:64; Screen 4:103; Screen 5:103 and Screen 6:167
