Moody’s Opera House launched on December 10, 1887 in Carbondale, IL. The Opera House installed Edison projection and played moving pictures on some nights. Those proved so popular that Christian H. McIntyre and R.F. Gabber took on the Opera House. They put in giant ventilation fans and renamed the Opera House as the Amuse-U Theatre on February 2, 1915 showing silent movies. Regular features stopped first in 1921, resumed and the theatre closed on September 28, 1924.
The Bank of Carbondale took on the location converting to a long-running bank that operated until the early-1980’s. The bank leased the facility beginning in 1983 to the Jackson Stage Company bringing live performances back to the venue after almost 70 years. The performances lasted until 2005. The building was deemed unsafe and torn down in November of 2005.
