Opened on July 20, 1996 and located in the waterfront area in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, the Great Lakes Science Center is a museum and educational facility. Many of the exhibits document the features of the natural environment in the Great Lakes region; among the other attractions is the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, which offers galleries, interactive exhibits and artefacts relating to the USA space programme.
The Center also includes the Cleveland Clinic Dome Theater which opened on October 15, 2016. It uses an adaptation of the IMAX system to show films on a domed screen that is six storeys high and has 11,600 watts of digital sound. This was the world’s first three-projector, laser-illuminated projection system. It is very impressive!
When I visited, on Monday 23rd July 2018, three separate films were being shown, on rotation: “Watermelon Magic”, a feel-good story about a young girl who learns to grow and love the titular fruit, “Amazon Adventure”, the true story of explorer Henry Bates’ epic journey through the Amazon rain forest in the 1850’s, and “America’s Musical Journey”, which I saw, which chronicles America’s rich music heritage. Each show lasts 50 minutes.
