Oscar Cinema

Opened as the Ritz Cinema in 1929, it was run by George Jay. It had 610 seats and was fitted with a Western Electric(WE) sound system, later being equipped for CinemaScope presentation. It was renamed the Oscar Cinema in the 1970’s, and although it closed for a while it resurfaced as the Oscar Theatre on 10 January 1977 when first play to be staged was “There Was a Young Man”. It closed again in 1985 and was purchased by the Sikh community in December 1986. The building now houses a Sikh temple.
