Gala Cinema

The Gala Cinema was designed by J.F. McCormack and opened on 23rd November 1955. The sizeable auditorium seated 1,850 meaning the cinema was one of the largest suburban cinemas in Dublin. It was partly owned by the Green Group from 1968 and was closed in 1980. For a time it was operating as a roller-skating rink, but was then turned into a bingo-hall at stalls level with a snooker club in the balcony. In 2014 the receivers were called in and two years later the site was earmarked for redevelopment as a Dealz store, but the company pulled out meaning the building remains empty apart from the retail units either side. One of the cinema’s ushers was famously known as “Harry the Hippo”.
