In the small coastal town of Aberaeron, situated between Cardigan and Aberystwyth, on Cardigan Bay, the Memorial Hall was built with donations from local people in memory of those who died in World War I.
The Memorial Hall opened on 1st April 1925. There was a reasonably sized stage, with dressing rooms, and the projection box was suspended from the ceiling above the entrance. The proscenium was 22ft wide, and the screen 18ft by 12ft.
In 1933 the cinema was licensed to Griffith Rees, and fitted with a Morrison sound system. One show weekly was presented throughout the 1930’s. In 1935 the proprietor was listed as Mr M. Jones, and it was part of the Western Cinema circuit. In 1948 BTH Supa projectors and sound system were installed; the proprietor by then was David C. Lloyd.
By 1943 the cinema was operating each evening, but by 1953 films were only being presented on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with a matinee on Saturday.
It is not known when film shows finally ended. Today the hall, in excellent shape, remains a focus for the community. The projection box remains in place, but films are not part of the hall’s programme of events.
