Lenton Palace

A purpose built picturehouse in the back-streets of Lenton opened for business on 9th December 1910. The exterior was plain, but the interior was lavish, with blue plush drapes with gold trimming positioned around the screen. Accommodation was provided for 600 people. Prices from 6d for a leather-upholstered seat at the back to 2d for a plain (probably wooden) seat at the front. Films were accompanied by a large Pathéphone. By February 1911, after the death of the manager Mr James Derbyshire, the seat prices had reduced considerably to 4d, 3d and 2d - children half-price. By April 1911 the cinema had closed. In December 1911 lace embroidery machinery had been moved in. In the 1960’s the building was demolished and the whole area has been redeveloped. With acknowledgement to the editor of ‘Lenton Times’.
