Located in the Parnell Centre, this was Ireland’s first IMAX cinema screening presentations on space, science, natural history and underwater adventures. It opened on 6th June 1998 and was a 370-seater owned by the Belfast-based Sheridan Group who invested IR£30 million in the project. The IMAX system used 3-D projectors with a 62 x 82ft screen as tall as three double-decker buses and state-of-the-art eight-channel digital audio sound to exhibit the world’s largest film format, a 70mm 15-perforation form. Its only success was “Fantasia 2000”, which grossed IR£286,000 during a 16-week run in spring 2000.
It closed on 8th October 2000 giving the UGC multiplex an opportunity to expand its nine-screen operation in the Centre which it duly did.

The new seventeen screen UGC (incorporating the former IMAX space) opened in November 2003 – see separate entry on Cinema Treasures for Cineworld Dublin. The Sheridan IMAX in Belfast (opened 2001) and the Sheridan IMAX in Bournemouth (opened 2002) also proved to be short-lived ventures; there are separate entries for these on this website.
