Located in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo. Patrick McGarry built the Star Cinema, opening it on 18th April 1948 with Gene Tierney in “Leave Her to Heaven”. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system and 400 seats. Bingo was popular in the 1960’s when a Ford Cortina was advertised as the top prize. McGarry also owned the Eclipse Ballroom next door. The Star Cinema was twinned in 1975 at a cost of IR£200,000 providing two screens of 200 and 100 seats. In later days it was run by Patrick’s son Gerry McGarry and was still operating in 1994, but was demolished in October 2008.
