Located in Bagenalstown, County Carlow. The Astor Cinema opened on 26th April 1940 with the film “Come on George” starring George Formby. It replaced the Palace Cinema next door which had been run by the same owner Harry Brown. It had a Philips sound system installed along with 350 seats. Around 1960 it was taken over by Ted Ray who eventually closed it in September 1980. It was reported that audiences had consisted of just four or five people. One anecdote is that it was customary to gather outside on New Years Eve for celebrations. The building was in use as Walsh’s Homevalue hardware store in the early-2000’s and later as a carpet store.
