The cinema was a conversion of a bakery shop owned by the Hardys and it opened on 17th October 1912, just a couple of months after the Town Hall started showing pictures. Early performances included plays including “Babes in the Wood”. It was later fitted with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system and had 450 seats. It was run by Irish Empire Palaces for most of its life. The interior was destroyed by fire on 21st February 1961 when the appropriately named “The Flame of Araby” was on the bill.
