Winter Cherry Cinema

Located in Kemerovo, Siberia. There was a 3-screen cinema inside the Winter Cherry Shopping Centre. Opened in 2013 in a conversion of a confectionary factory.

There was a fire in the cinema that started on the top floor (level 4) of the shopping centre in area of the trampoline centre/children’s entertainment centre on 25th March 2018. It was 5pm on a Sunday afternoon at the beginning of school half-term holiday and the shopping centre and its cinemas were packed. A birthday party was being held in the children’s entertainment centre and candles set fire to a bouncy castle. The fire quickly spreading to the adjacent cinemas. The fire alarm and sprinkler system failed to activate, and the emergency exit doors were locked, it is reported to be a means of stopping people trying to sneak into the auditoriums without paying. Initially the death toll was 64 (with another 67 missing), which included many children who were in one of the cinema screens watching the cartoon film “Sherlock Gnomes”.

A ‘Park of the Angels’ opened on the site on 15th September 2019.
