In Weston-super-Mare, north Somerset, construction on the leisure sector of the long-awaited £45m Dolphin Square regeneration scheme was originally scheduled to begin in late-2013, but was put back several times before work finally started in 2015. One problem appears to have been a failure to attract retailers after a Premier Inn and a car park were constructed.
Vue Cinemas were originally going to operate the multi-screen cinema, but that circuit pulled out. When Cineworld signed up, this gave the whole project a boost, albeit while adding a further six months of delays while discussions were held regarding the size and capacity of the cinema, with Cineworld finally agreeing to increase capacity by more than 40 per cent by increasing the number of screens from seven to eight. With the largest screen having 339 seats, and the smallest having 135, these are good sizes by today’s standards. (The cinema is aiming to cater for more than 12,000 patrons a week.)
The Cineworld opened on Friday 26th January 2018.
It is surrounded by the usual restaurants, including Nando’s, Pizza Express, Prezzo and Costa Coffee, while, as reported in February 2018, indoor rock climbing centre ‘Rock Up’ and Anytime Fitness are to open shortly.
The council expressed that hope that the revival of this prominent site in the heart of the town centre would benefit both residents and visitors alike, and act as a catalyst for further investment in the town. Discussions are being held with Homes England, the Government’s housing investment body, to bring forward the development of about 180 new high quality homes on the remaining part of the site.

I have been told by one of the managers there that all 8 screens are ‘Flat’ necessitating that Scope films are shown ‘letterboxed’ with black bars top and bottom. The photos on here back that up.
This seems to be a common trend for recently built Cineworlds. They seem to have lost interest in showing Scope films properly. With 80%+ of movies nowadays filmed in Scope this does seem rather a strange decision. Cineworld top management don’t seem fussed; perhaps they are not moviegoers themselves. Their cinema experience is like watching a big TV set.
I hope that is not the case at the brand new Cineworld, Watford 9-screen cinema due to open on 14th December 2018, albeit I’m mainly interested in the ‘new IMAX with Laser’ screen.
Is anyone able to confirm the aspect ratio of the screens ?
Are they indeed all 1.85 ‘Flat’ as reported or are there some ‘Scope screens in the larger auditoria ?
