The Elite Theatre was opened on July 27, 1910 in downtown Callaway, NE. On February 15, 1912 it was renamed Star Theatre. The theatre was updated for sound in the late-1920’s to remain viable. The Star Theatre was updated twice once more in the 1950’s. A 1950 refresh brought improved sound and a Streamlined style interior, while in 1955 brought widescreen projection to present CinemaScope films, the first of which was Robert Mitchum in “River of No Return”.

Due to declining audiences, the Calloway Chamber of Commerce stepped in to operate the Star Theatre in its final stage of operation. The 50th Anniversary film at the theatre in July 1960 was “The Mouse that Roared” starring Peter Sellers. But time was not on the Star Theatres' side as the population of the town had dropped 25% from over 800 to around 600 people between 1930 to 1960. The Chamber voted to closed the Star Theatre due to lack of patronage following its June 25, 1961 screening of “Blueprint for Robbery” starring J. Pat O'Malley. A special free kids screening on December 23, 1961 appears to be its final screening.
